The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
What you will be doing
Energy harvesting is the conversion of unused energy (mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermic or electromagnetic) in the surrounding environment into small amount of exploitable electrical power. This technology, as a new power source for small electronic systems, is attracting more attention in the recent years. It is a promising energy source for self-sustained electronic devices without maintenance with wireless communication capabilities.
We currently running projects about the realization of new nanotechnology based generators. The mechanisms by which the energy is collected are based on effects such as electromagnetism, triboelectricity and piezoelectricity. The challenge of the work will be the setting of a low power consumption management for wireless communication compatible with the energy harvester to obtain IoT capabilities of the autonomous sensors unit. The internship work will allow building and in field testing of a first prototype as a proof-of-concept. The applications concern industrial market.
