The Institute for Language and Communication at the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) and the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Liège (Belgium) are looking for applicants for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in contrastive corpus linguistics (French/Dutch/English and/or additional languages if possible).
The post-doctoral project is part of the FNRS-funded project “How do grammar and discourse interact? Answers from subordination, coordination and insubordination”, a collaborative project between Liesbeth Degand (University of Louvain) and An Van linden (University of Liège).
The goal of this research project is to investigate the grammar-discourse interface and more specifically the question of how speakers bend the language system’s affordances (i.e. grammar) to new uses in discourse. The research questions to be addressed are as follows: How does clause combining at the grammatical (sentence) level map onto relation types established at the discourse level? What is the relationship between coordination, subordination and insubordination, in terms of grammar and discourse? What does this tell us about the discourse-grammar interface? The post-doctoral researcher will work in close interaction with the promoters of the project, but also with the doctoral candidate working on patterns of adverbial insubordination in French and Spanish interaction.
